Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by one of two virus variants, Variola major and Variola minor.[1] The agent of variola virus (VARV) belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus.[2] The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980.[3] The risk of death after contracting the disease was about 30%, with higher rates among babies.[4][5] Often those who survived had extensive scarring of their skin, and some were left blind.[4]
The initial symptoms of the disease included fever and vomiting.[6] This was followed by formation of ulcers in the mouth and a skin rash.[6] Over a number of days the skin rash turned into characteristic fluid-filled blisters with a dent in the center.[6] The bumps then scabbed over and fell off, leaving scars.[6] The disease was spread between people or via contaminated objects.[4][7] Prevention was achieved mainly through the smallpox vaccine.[8] Once the disease had developed, certain antiviral medication may have helped.[8]
According to Medscape: "Intentional inoculation with subvirulent strains of variola to protect against variola major (variolation) began in India sometime before the first millennium CE. This practice spread throughout the Old World and eventually reached Europe in the early 18th century. "
Dr. Charles Nichols of Boston gave this indictment on smallpox in India at the turn of the century : “In India, according to an official return presented to the British House of Commons by Viscount Morley, there have been, during 30 years, 1877 to 1906, 3,344,325 deaths from smallpox of persons presumably vaccinated, for vaccination is universally enforced in India….In each and every community where vaccination ceases and strict sanitation is substituted, smallpox disappears. There are no exceptions to this.”[9]
Immunity[edit]
According to Medscape, "cell-mediated immunity likely plays an important role in controlling disease... The relative importance of the cellular immune response against smallpox has been demonstrated in animals. Studies show that mice with defective T cells are able to generate normal humoral responses to a viral challenge, yet they die when exposed to Orthopoxvirus concentrations that are sublethal in healthy mice."
This means that people with compromised immune system (for example, due to Covid-19 vaccines) are at great risk.
