P. L. Bhargava (Purushottam Lal Bhargava) (born 29 May 1909) was an Indian Sanskrit scholar and the founder head of the Department of Sanskrit at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. He was a prominent figure in the field of Indology and made significant contributions to the study of ancient Indian history and Sanskrit literature.[1]

Early Life and Education

P. L. Bhargava was born in Alwar, Rajasthan, into a family of scholars. He showed a keen interest in languages and history from a young age. He completed his higher education at Lucknow University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree and won the Empress Victoria gold medal for standing first in the B.A. examination. He also obtained Master's degrees in Sanskrit, Hindi, and History.[2]

Career

P. L. Bhargava began his academic career with a focus on reconstructing ancient Indian history and separating historical facts from myths. He authored several influential books, including Chandragupta Maurya and India in the Vedic Age. His scholarly work received high praise from experts in the field of Indology.[3]

In 1961, he laid the foundation of the Department of Sanskrit at the University of Rajasthan. Under his leadership, the department quickly gained recognition as one of the leading Sanskrit departments in India, attracting students from both India and abroad.[4]
