  • August 1: 1920 – Death of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Indian lawyer and journalist (b. 1856)
  • August 3: Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
  • August 3 1929 – Jiddu Krishnamurti, believed to be the "World Teacher" by C. W. Leadbeater, shocked the Theosophy movement by dissolving the Order of the Star.
  • August 4: Varalakshmi Vrat. Varalakshmi Vratam is very popular fasting and Puja day in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
  • August 7 (Full Moon): Raksha Bandhan. Rakhi, which is also known as Raksha Bandhan, is a Hindu festival which is celebrated across India. Raksha Bandhan is recognized and celebrated among Hindus for its symbolic significance. Raksha Bandhan draws it significance from a sacred thread which is known as Rakhi. It is believed that the thread protects the one who wears it, especially during the auspicious time of Shravana Purnima.
  • August 7: Hayagriva Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Hayagriva who is considered the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

  • August 7: Sanskrit Diwas. In modern India, Gayatri Jayanti day during Shravana Purnima is observed as Sanskrit Diwas, a day to mark the importance of Sanskrit language.
  • August 7: Gayatri Jayanti. Gayatri Jayanti is observed as the birth anniversary of Goddess Gayatri, the Goddess of Veda. Being the Goddess of all Veda, Goddess Gayatri is also known as Veda Mata. Devotees observe Gayatri Jayanti by making special prayers to Gayatri Mata and by repeatedly chanting Gayatri Mantra.

  • August 8: The Festival of the Tooth: In Sri Lanka there is a temple that houses a tooth relic of the Buddha. It can't be seen, but once a year there is a procession for it on the full moon in August

  • August 24: Hartalika Teej. Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed during Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada month. On this day, makeshift statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made with the sand and worshipped. Hartalika Vrat is known as Gowri Habba in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and it is a significant festival to get blessing of Goddess Gowri.
