The Bhalanas are one of the tribes that fought against Sudas in the Dasarajna battle.

Some scholars have argued that the Bhalanas lived in East Kabulistan, and that the Bolan Pass derives its name from the Bhalanas. [1]

Bhalanas

The Bhalanas are one of the ancient Indo-Aryan tribes mentioned in the Rigveda. They are noted for their participation in the famous Battle of the Ten Kings (Dasarajna), which is described in Mandala 7 of the Rigveda.

Historical Context

The Battle of the Ten Kings was a significant conflict among various tribes along the banks of the river Ravi (then known as Parushni). The Bhalanas, along with other tribes such as the Alinas, Pakthas, and Vishanins, fought against the Bharatas, who emerged victorious.

Geographic Location

The Bhalanas are believed to have lived in the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent, possibly in the area that is now modern-day Punjab. Their exact location and the extent of their territory remain subjects of scholarly research and debate.

Cultural Significance

As with many Vedic tribes, the Bhalanas played a role in the early formation of Vedic culture and society. Their mention in the Rigveda highlights their involvement in the socio-political dynamics of the time and their interactions with other contemporary tribes.
